How to Care for Your Leather Items

Many times, all you need to do to clean your leather products is give them a quick buffing with a soft cloth. If more is needed, remember there are different methods for deeper cleaning. See below for details.

Also, all leathers have oils in them from the tanning process and some have wax. Sometimes, the wax comes to the surface, creating a white opaque film. This can easily be buffed off with a soft cloth.

Each leather item is unique with the type of leather(s) used, so please ask any questions about the needs of your individual product(s).

Vegetable Tanned Leathers

Vegetable-tanned leather requires special care to maintain its natural beauty and durability. To care for it, regularly clean the leather with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Avoid soaking it in water, as this can damage the leather. Apply a small amount of leather conditioner or oil periodically to keep it moisturized and prevent cracking. Store your leather items in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to avoid fading. Over time, vegetable-tanned leather will develop a rich patina, so embrace its natural aging process while keeping it well-maintained.

All Other Leathers

Distressed oil-tanned leather has a rugged, worn look and is highly durable, but it still needs care to maintain its appearance and longevity. To clean it, use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away dirt, then allow it to air dry. Avoid soaking the leather in water, as it can affect its texture. Occasionally apply a leather conditioner or oil to nourish the leather and enhance its natural patina. For added protection, you can use a wax-based leather protector, but be sure to test it on a small area first. Store your items in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, to prevent fading and cracking.

Chrome-tanned leather is more water-resistant and durable than vegetable-tanned leather, but it still requires proper care. To clean it, use a damp cloth and mild soap only if necessary, then wipe it dry. Apply a leather conditioner occasionally to keep it soft and supple. Avoid exposure to excessive heat or sunlight, which can cause fading or drying out.

Suede leather is more delicate and can easily stain or lose its texture. To care for suede, gently brush it with a suede brush to lift the nap and remove dirt. Avoid using water, as it can leave marks; instead, treat stains with a suede eraser or specialized cleaner. Store suede items in a cool, dry place, and use a protective suede spray to help resist stains and water damage.
